"The only reason for passive crossovers is cost. If the goal is accurate music reproduction, it’s a waste of time to deal with them."
Siegfried Linkwitz (1935 - 2018)
In professional recording studios, active speakers have long been the standard, but for enjoying music at home, passive speakers are still more common today because they place fewer demands on the amplifiers used. For active multi-way speakers, two to three amplifiers per stereo channel are required, and secondly, those amplifiers must be of the highest quality, as they drive the voice coils of individual speakers directly. Active crossovers enable much better transient reproduction. Even the slightest imperfections in the amplifiers can become noticeable, which may bother the critical listener more than the sound engineer.
Speakers with passive crossovers do not reproduce as accurately and are more tolerant of amplifier imperfections. Of course, passive speakers also benefit from perfect amplifiers, but less perfect amplifiers do not diminish the enjoyment of music as much as they do with active multi-way speakers. Therefore, when technical precision is less important, and the focus is more on comfort and feel, a passive amplifier/speaker combination is usually preferred.
This changes with the SINCOS MonoAmps of the Mk3 generation. Primarily due to extremely elaborate voltage stabilization and filtering, the signal processing is so clean that the fundamental advantages of active multi-way speakers prevail. Even the smallest active system, the MS6EH Mk3, delivers sound quality that no passive amplifier/speaker combination can match, regardless of size or price. With an active sixth-order bass reflex system, impressive deep bass reproduction is achieved for small to medium-sized rooms, eliminating the need for an additional subwoofer.
An MS6EH Mk3 system includes two speaker cabinets with 6-inch mid-woofers and 30mm tweeters, two SINCOS MonoAmps with two amplifiers each, an analog 2-way active crossover, three separate power supplies, two stands that integrate the MonoAmps, and two 4-core special cables for connecting the speakers to the amplifiers.
